Congratulations to Alberta's newest National Champions - Kinley Gibson, Jaye Milley & Chris McNeil.
Thursday June 27th marked the first day of Junior, Master & Para National Road Championship competition in Megantic Quebec. Team Alberta started off the day strong, with Alberta's finest taking to the ITT course. At the end of the day, the team walked away with two newly crowned National champions and an array of strong finishes to complement their hard work.
First up were the Junior Women, followed by Para men & women. Edmonton's Kinley Gibson powered her way to a Gold medal in the Junior Women's ITT, finishing with a time of 21:56 over the 15km course. Other notable finishes in the Junior women's race include Canmore's Liah Harvey with a time of 23:29, good enough for 8th place, and Canmore's Sara Poidevin with a time of 23:59, finishing in 11th spot.
Calgary's Jaye Milley battled his way to Para C ITT Gold in a close finish with Quebec's Marie-Claude Molnar, completing the 15km course with a time of 23:37. Calgary's Brayden McDougall also had a strong race, finishing in 5th spot with a final time of 25:15.
The afternoon session started off with Master 30-39 and 40-49 men hitting the course first, followed by the Junior men at 1:00pm. In the Master 30-39 Men's race, Calgary's Chris McNeil proved to be strongest on the day, taking home the ITT National title with a time of 19:16. In the Master 40-49 men's ITT, Grande Prairie's Geoff Macdonald was Alberta's top finisher, stepping onto the podium in 3rd place with a time of 19:38.
The Junior men's race brought out the day's largest field, with 58 riders from across the country battling for the National title. In the end, Edmonton's Evan Burtnik was Team Alberta's top finisher, finishing in 15th place with a time of 43:13 over 30km. Calgary's Eric Johnstone completed the course with a time of 43:58, finishing 23rd overall, followed by Edmonton's Mason Burtnik in 48th with a time of 46:29.
