How do I purchase a membership?

This category applies to individuals belonging to an ABA affiliated recreational or racing club who do not hold a Race License or Citizen Permit. The Club Membership program is a way for club members to gain access to the ABA's sport injury and liability insurance coverage during their club events. Club Members have a vote at the ABA's Annual General Meeting, but are not eligible for provincial upgrade points.  Club Memberships can only be purchased through an ABA affiliated club.

• Club Members can participate in their club’s activities
• Receive insurance coverage (CGL & AD&D) for their club’s activities
• Can register for up-to three Provincial level events with day-licenses (not eligible for upgrades or awards)
  
• Can take advantage of one event racing license (SEL) in MTB, Gravel and Cyclocross.

An Alberta race license is not a UCI race license, but a license which allows riders to participate in designated ABA sanctioned events and allows racers to become more active in the racing scene beyond club or midweek racing.  The Citizen License is purchased by riders who wish to compete only in Alberta events in Road, MTB, Gravel and Cyclo-Cross (excluding Nationals, Canada Cup or World Cup events held within the Province). Citizen license holders many only compete in entry level categories regardless of age or ability, they can collect upgrade points but are only able to use them if they take out a CC/UCI license.   Riders who have previously held a UCI license are only able to be issued this license if they are in the lowest category of each discipline.

• • Can register at entry level Road Races, Gravel, MTB-XC, Enduro - MTB, and Cyclocross races.
  • Can participate in races in club events (e.g. midweek racing, district racing)
  • Receive insurance coverage (CGL & AD&D) for their sanctioned cycling activities

Those who wish to compete in ability based categories as well as out-of-province or at national and international events held within Alberta must be CC/UCI licensed members. Licensed racing members receive all of the benefits of ABA membership.  The ABA issues the License on behalf of the CCA & UCI.  All individuals registering as a Commissaire must take this license.

  • CCA/License valid internationally
• Late Season Cyclo-cross licenses, Para licenses and MTB licenses are only valid for the individual discipline

You must have the appropriate credentials to register for a number of technical license categories:

• Coaches must have completed training and/or certification as an NCCP cycling coach.
• Drivers must have successfully completed Cycling Canada’s online Caravan Driver Training

Single Event License (must pay at event, or through online registration)

Club Members will be permitted to compete at ABA events with the purchase of a day-license (rate to be set on an annual basis).  A club member will only be allowed to compete in a maximum of three (3) events with a day-license.  There will be no day-licensing available for BMX races.  Any day-licensed individual will not be eligible for upgrade points or series points unless they buy a UCI/CCA license

• Athletes who do not hold a racing license who wish to participate in events may do so under certain circumstances.
• Athletes may purchase up to three SELs in a season.
• Single Event licenses are generally offered at CX, MTB, ITT and Timed Track events.
• Mountain Bikes Races; SELs are applicable to any ability category
• Cyclocross Races; SELs are restricted to Novice Category and Sport Women
• Road + Track Events; SELs restricted to individually timed events only. Not available for mass start races. 
• Provincial Championship policy regarding SELs: athletes may compete at MTB, Track, ITT or CX events under a SEL but do not qualify for a Provincial Championship podium. Organizers may, or will, elect to offer a second podium to recognize a finish ranking. To be a provincial medalist you must be a member of the association. 

• All prices above are before Uplifter processing fees and applicable taxes.

• Membership age is based on the individual’s age as of December 31 of the current year.

• If there are any pricing issues during the registration process, please contact the ABA Office. When upgrading from one membership to another, members will only be asked to pay the difference in membership costs. Once processed, the original membership is considered cancelled.
