The UCI has recently made some changes to the classes of UCI BMX races (please see UCI
regulations for information on the new classes). With the new classes came some changes to
the international calendar. Unfortunately, the continental championship event to be held on
July 3rd conflicted with the Red Deer UCI event. We have now corrected the conflict moving
Red Deer to July 10th 2010.
In 2010 we have moved forward with plans to move the National Championship to late August;
this will solve a couple of issues we have been experiencing the few season. The first issue
being hosting the National Championships early in our season before all riders have had
optimal preparation. Our hope is that we have now created a level playing field for all athletes
no matter which province they are from. The National Championship which was previously
used as the final selection for the World’s team will now be used to select a National ID Pool
team for the following year.
Another challenge with moving the date to after the World Championships is that the UCI
points attached to National Championships (class 6 event) will be counted towards the 2011
season, meaning that athletes will be missing the chance to earn UCI points from the National
Championships in 2010. After consultation, a decision was made to sanction the Abbotsford
May 23rd event as a class 6 event in 2010 for championship categories to receive points for a
class 6 event in the 2010 UCI year. Although it’s a class 6 event, there will be no national
champion title awarded at this event. The National Championship titles will be awarded at
the August event in Airdrie.
FAQ:
Q: Why does the UCI calendar say Canadian National championships Abbotsford BC May 23rd?
A: In order to attach the class 6 points to the Abbotsford race the UCI required the name of the event to
be Canadian National Championships. The Canadian National Championships in Airdire, will be posted
on the 2011 UCI calendar.
Q: I’m a second year junior do I have to race Elite in Airdrie?
A: Yes, All events after August 1st count for the 2011 UCI ranking and second year junior athletes
therefore are required to move up to their 2011 class. 16 year old athletes have the option to move up to
Junior.
Q: How does this affect me as a Challenge Rider?
A: As a challenge rider, you will now have longer to prepare for the event .However if you are in the 16
class you will have the option of racing 16 or Junior.
